By Anna Luberda – …Instead it rained for two weeks. Yes, Mother Nature has not let up as of today. Instead of being at the Red Lodge Nature Center, I am at the Billings Public Library. I had hoped to take lots of pictures of my students hiking and learning about the indigenous animals of Southeastern Montana but alas, I am stuck indoors.
It has been raining on and off here in Montana for the last month and for the past two weeks the sun has barely shown its face. Unfortunately for my students, and everyone else on the reservation, the roads have been washed out rendering people unable to even leave their homes.
This is the second to last week of school and it looks like there won’t even be school at all. I had lots of fun things planned for this week and I don’t think I will be able to do any of them now, as next week is filled with all-school activities. The rain has indeed made the last month of school rather difficult. Instead of the kids playing outside on the playground for recess, we’ve been stuck in the gym. If you’ve ever seen 50 kids under the age of 10 running around in a tiny gym for 30 minutes, you’d know how nerve-wracking indoor recess can be. The rain hasn’t spoiled all our fun, however.
The track coach had planned an outdoor field day for the lower grades last Friday. I knew it would be cancelled as I drove to work in the pouring rain and I was dreading the looks on my kids’ faces when I would have to tell them.
When I got to school I talked to the coach and she told me of her plan to have the field day in the gym. I was worried it wouldn’t go well in such a small space. I was wrong, thankfully. My kids had so much fun with the sack races, long jump, and shuttle run. They even won ribbons with their names on them.
As the school year is winding down, it seems like things are getting crazier on a daily basis. My kids are excited to get outside and play while I’m trying to wrap up their year. The rain has put a damper on my lessons and it has made things very difficult for everyone living out on the reservation.
Hopefully we will have school tomorrow, but the clouds don’t seem to be letting up. In any case, I’ll take these days off as time to relax and prepare for the last week of school.
