The MU/ Divergent Connection

In post-apocalyptic Chicago, society has been divided into five factions, each based on a particular virtue: Amity, Abnegation, Candor, Erudite, and Dauntless. At age sixteen, everyone must choose either their own faction or a new one to spend the rest of their days.

Beatrice Prior, age sixteen, is on the verge of making her choice—a choice that will define her. One choice is to stay with her family, the other to follow her heart and find her own way. Her choice surprises her family—and herself.

Undergoing faction initiation, Beatrice transforms herself into Tris, a girl safeguarding a secret kept hidden from all others. Society begins to come apart around Tris, forcing her to choose between family, friends, and a new love, and becoming who she is meant to be. Can she choose them all?

Veronica’s Roth’s Divergent series has a unique Marquette connection! You may not know it, but the editor of all three books, Mollie O’Neill is a 2000 alum of MU. IN fact, Ms. O’Neill graduated with a degree in education, although she went on to pursue other professional avenues.

Check back next week for a Q&A with Ms. O’Neill and your chance to win a copy of Divergent! The first movie comes out in March of 2014; the College of Ed has 15 copies to give away to catch up just in time to see Tris and Four on the big screen.
